| Indiana is probably the smallest
Midwest state in area. It is approximately 140 miles wide by 265 miles tall.
Drive time from Indianapolis, near the center of the state, averages 3 hours to Chicago, 2
hours to Louisville, 2 to Cincinnati, 3 to Columbus, 4 to Detroit, and 5 to St.
Louis. 3 interstate highways converge on Indianapolis making the city literally the
"Crossroads of the Midwest". The Indianapolis airport provides many daily
flights to all major cities in the U.S. including Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York
City. The airport also supports the Midwest hub of both the U.S. Postal Service
(Express Mail) and Federal Express. Much of the northern part of the state can be
reached from Chicago O'Hare in under 2 hours while southern Indiana can be easily reached
by the airports of Louisville and Cincinnati. Topography is very diverse here. Most of the state was covered by glaciers during the last Ice Age and when they retreated, the melt water formed the Great Lakes. Along the north border are many sand dunes, wetlands, and marshes. The mid north is relatively flat prairie lands except for the Wabash Valley area and its tributaries. Central Indiana is grasslands and some rolling hills while southern region is larger hills and thousands of caves within the limestone rock bed. The Hoosier National Forest is the largest continuing acreage of forest in the state and possibly the nation with over 1000 acres of old growth forest. |
| Indiana has 4 distinct seasonal changes each offering a wonderful backdrop for shooting. Some data has been gathered and put into a table below for quick reference. However you can click here for a more detailed 30 year average by region or county. |

| Frequently, a production manager or coordinator may need to know when sunrise and sunset will be in order to schedule call times for the crew. Or, maybe your DP would like to shoot a series of evenings under the fullest moonlight possible. Whatever astronomical info you need, from eclipses to altitude and azimuth of the sun, you can find it at the U.S. Naval Observatory: Astronomical Applications page here. |
